That was one of the best Storm miniseries, in my opinion. Before the Storm sucked. Storm and the Black Panther just made me enraged. The Storm mini pretty much made it canon that Ororo smelled like sandalwood, which of course launched ten thousand fanfic copycats.
I seem to recall liking it, but it’s been years since I’ve read it. I will now, though. I think Black Panther and Storm getting together pretty much pissed off 90% of the world. I wouldn’t have minded it so much if it didn’t feel like something they think they needed force because they’re both the premier black heroes without actual buildup to that point and then thinking it was okay to force us to swallow it. Also, I’m kind of not happy with how now that they’re having issues they seem to be trying to make ONE of them the real problem, and it seems that’s going to be Black Panther. I like Black Panther, but now, it’s like they’re doing everything in their power to make me hate him because, of course, a majority of X-Men fans are going to be in Storm’s corner. Do we really have to do this, Marvel?
I don’t really think they made T’Challa the problem. If anything, Marvel has kind of built up Storm over the past couple of years to seem like she deserted him. When Warren Ellis wrote her into Astonishing at the very beginning of his run, Storm and Emma were all buddy-buddy (which made me facepalm) and talking about “all that guilt-free shopping and sex got boring.” Really? It was a mess.
I never liked the pairing, I’ll admit it. But the annulment was just as goofy as the wedding itself. T’Challa’s the high priest? He might as well have turned around three times, chanted “I divorce thee, I divorce thee, I divorce thee” and spit on the ground. The storytelling just wasn’t there.
I liked the old Storm mini from ‘96. Storm was still a strong character, the tiny little shred of chemistry between her and Cable was entertaining, and it had Callisto in it, before the goofy green tentacles and weird Band-Aid/fishnet pasties she wore during the Claremont/Kordey run that I couldn’t stand.
I agree they did build up to her basically abandoning him, but then, when all this recent mess started happening, it seemed like they tried to make T’Challa as unlikable as they could, giving a dubious reason for people to go: “If that’s what she had to put up with, then good riddance!”
That whole divorce thing. The marriage was… I don’t know if I have words for it… but again I agree, the divorce was about 500000 times worse than the whole marriage. I wanted to scream about them. Why did we have to even go through this crap? I was just about done with Marvel with the whole marital spat in the middle of the AvX fight. And why was everyone letting Scott run away balls out—even if he was right. I standby the opinion that Scott was right. Har, har. But I just didn’t like how he went about it.
But then, I pretty much want to fight Marvel about so many things right now.
So many things. I didn’t even finish AvX, I was pretty much done after Tony said, “Fuck testing” and pretty much CREATED the Phoenix Five, but isn’t blamed for using shaky tech to try to stop the Phoenix because “Fuck Scott!” was more important.
AvX: Fuck Science, Fuck Marriage, Fuck Siblings, Fuck Friends, but Most Especially, FUCK SCOTT
Because after a while that did seem to be the most important thing.
